As most of you know, I'll be launching a new romantic-comedy mystery series next year. The series is tentatively called Holmes and Moriarity, and the first book is titled SOMEBODY KILLED HIS EDITOR. It's being released through Samhain. -- and these folks are nothing if not proactive. Although the book won't be released until next June, my editor has already been after me for the cover art request and the blurbs.
And if there's one thing I hate to do it's write blurbs. So...here's the contest.
I need a tagline describing SOMEBODY KILLED HIS EDITOR.
The tagline is a hook, it's what appears on the page and entices the reader to click and read the rest of the blurb and then the excerpt. The tagline is NOT a mini-blurb--again, it's a hook. Think of the taglines that NY sometimes puts on the covers of books. That's what we're looking for. If you're still not sure what I'm talking about, take a gander at the Samhain website and look at a variety of the taglines people have come up with.
And then I need a 200 word blurb.
The blurb is the cover copy for your book. Remember, when you go to print, this is what's going to convince people to either buy your book or to open it up and take a closer look. On the website, the blurb, combined with the excerpt, has to be sharp enough to make the reader take a chance. In 200 words or less, convince the reader to buy your book. And since it would be impossible to write these without having an idea of the story, you can read the first three chapters or so at my website. More than that you don't really need, because we don't want spoilers popping up in the blurb.
I was going to offer a free signed copy of the print book when it comes out, but that will probably be about a year from the electronic release, and that's a long time to wait. So the person who writes the best tagline and the person who writes the best 200 word blurb, will each have their name used for a character in the next (fifth) Adrien English novel. (Or you can just pick a name for the character or have the character named after someone else). Now, I'm not guaranteeing the name will have a starring role -- the name may be just make a cameo appearance -- or it may even be a villain. I have no idea which at this point because...I haven't written the book yet.
So that's it. That's my contest. You can post your blurbs right here in the comment section. You can post funny ones or serious ones. I don't care. Even if I don't use any of them, they'll give me ideas and we'll have some fun, and I'll still use your names for the ones I think work best. Or, heck, maybe I'll invite my editor to choose.
Let's see. I'll give it to December 30th. How's that?
So put your thinking caps on -- or your thinking ear muffs. Baby, it's cold out there!
