Coming Soon From a Josh Lanyon Near You!

Well, maybe not that soon as I'm doing my best to stick to that sane and sensible schedule thing. So while it is -- already! --  time to list the planned projects for 2013, I'm not attaching any dates to anything. I hope to have a story out every couple of months, and that's about as far as I'm willing to commit. That way I don't disappoint anyone should I not hit the planned dates -- and I don't make myself nuts should I...er...not hit the planned dates.

I mean, surely if there's one big, fat, perk to working for one's self it's being able to rearrange one's schedule?

Anyway, here are the projects in the loosely anticipated order of delivery.

BLOOD RED BUTTERFLY - novella
Despite falling in love with aloof manga artist Kai Tashiro, Homicide Detective Ryo Miller is determined to break the alibi Kai is supplying his murderous boyfriend--even if it means breaking Kai with it.

THE BOY WITH THE PAINFUL TATTOO (Holmes & Moriarity 3) - novel
It's moving day at Chez Holmes. Somehow, against Kit's better instincts, he and J.X. are setting up house together. But while J.X. is off at a writing conference, Kit unpacks a crate that should contain either old books or new china. It doesn't. Within the mounds of green Styrofoam popcorn is a dead body. A very dead body.

There goes the neighborhood.

MAN OH MAN: WRITING QUALITY M/M FICTION - reworked and revised with a bonus section on writing genre fiction which includes some really terrific (if I do say so myself) goodies.

ILL MET BY MOONLIGHT (Shot in the Dark 2) - novella
File it under The Mummy Case, Effie.

A blackmail scheme ends with murder at a swanky costume ball in an Egyptian museum. As much as tough guy PI Rafferty wants to pin the crime on Brett Sheridan's famed Egyptologist former lover, he can't help fearing the murderer may be hiding closer to home. Too close to home.

STRANGER ON THE SHORE - novella
Twenty years ago young Brian Arlington, scion to the Arlington fortune, was kidnapped. Though the ransom was paid, the boy was never seen again. Pierce Mather, the only witness, now controls the Arlington billions. He's none too happy, and more than a little suspicious, when investigative journalist Griffin Hadley shows up to write about the decades-old mystery -- especially given Griffin's uncanny resemblance to the missing heir. Griff shrugs off the coldly handsome Pierce's objections, but it might not be so easy to shrug off the objections of someone willing to do anything to keep the past buried.

WINTER KILL - novel
An FBI agent and an Oregon deputy team up to catch a serial killer.

KICK START (Dangerous Ground 5) - novella
Will is finally braced to bring Taylor home to meet the folks. Unfortunately, not every member of the Brandt clan loves Taylor the way Will does. Then again, not everyone loves the Brandts. In fact, someone has a score to settle -- and too bad for any former DS agents who get in the way when the bullets start to fly.

BITE CLUB (XOXO 2) - novella
All I know is, it's about vampires and old movies!

STRANGER THINGS HAVE HAPPENED - Surprise, surprise!

It is indeed ambitious! But most of the projects are at least outlined and started, which helps.

Winter Kill sounds like it will be a good one. Also curious about The Boy with the Painful Tattoo. Hmm.

Winter Kill is the most ambitious effort this year. And Boy With the Painful Tattoo will be the most amusing (for me).

Yes! That's how I'm looking at it. Worst case scenario is there will still be lots of great stories to enjoy working on this year.

This is the most exciting news I've heard all day! I'm really intrigued by Stranger on the Shore and looking forward to the surprise. I hope you have as much fun writing them as I will reading them.

Now that's the one I'm most nervous about! ;-) But it will be fun. Classic romantic suspense. I just have to figure out the twist.

STRANGER THINGS HAVE HAPPENED - Surprise, surprise!
While I respected your decision to slow down and take some much needed time off last year, I'm so excited for the slate of projects you listed above. 2013 looks like a great year for Josh Lanyon fans!

I'm especially intrigued by the last entry- especially since you included an Adrien English tag at the bottom. I'll be so happy if we get a little more Adrien & Jake; the series is my all-time favorite in the M/M genre!

I'm trying to preserve a sphinx-like silence on that one. Mostly because I don't know what everyone is going to make of it. A lot of WHAAAAA--?! I suspect.

Such a selection
Thanks for the fantastic list, Josh. I can't wait to read them, but of course written at your pace. It will be exciting waiting for them. Love all the continuing stories and characters and really excited about the new ones. My imagination is running wild. Woot!

Yes! That's what I like about this schedule. It's a nice mix of old and new. A little something for everyone, I hope.

Lots to look forward to, then!! Especially the novels!! And I can see I'm going to have to buy Man Oh Man all over again! Good luck with it all - and definitely take advantage of making your own schedule. Some really good writers seem to produce less than their best work when their publishers push them too hard, so as you can now be your own publisher, don't slave drive yourself!!

I'm doing something I haven't done in years, which is jump from project to project as the mood takes me. I'm not sure if this will ultimately slow or speed production, but it makes for a more creative mindset.

I love the mix of further instalments of known and loved characters and brand new ones! My only worry is that this might be too much for one year... but the selfish side of me says: yes, please! But no rush.

Jan. 12th, 2013 04:35 pm (UTC)
And I'm trying to prepare for that because I know I've never tried to balance all the doing my own print, commissioning audio, commissioning covers, looking for translators, etc. with writing full time. It's a lot of time that has to be -- HAS to be -- spent not writing. And yet still working.

So this will definitely be a year of learning -- and then I'll have a more realistic idea for the future.

Well, this is beginning to look like a promising year for your fans. ^_^ I'm especially looking forward to #3 of the Holmes & Moriarity series - I like well-constructed mysteries that make me laugh between the disasters.

Thank you for the update and good luck (and fun) with your projects!

The thing I have to take into consideration now that I never did before is the business end of everything. Publishing my own work is a lot more complicated than having a publisher take care of everything. A lot more time consuming.

Re: A great 2013
I do plan to stay healthy -- and the first two weeks into the year I've already figured out it will take more thought than I anticipated. But I feel cheerful because it just amounts to learning to be healthy doing work I love to do. How hard can it be?

I'm glad you're re-releasing 'Man, Oh Man', because I found - and still find - it a most useful book. It was the first of your books that I read, and I started reading your fiction because I enjoyed the excerpts in it so much.

I'm so glad!

I've added a bonus section on writing sub-genre within the genre and that section includes essays and roundtable discussion by some of my favorite writers in the genre. I think the book will be worth purchasing for that section alone.

I've never before been driven to participate in blogging so this is a first for me but I am soooooooooo happy for a Will and Taylor book that I was forced to sign-up for an account. Also, am pleased about the Holmes and Moriarity book and my attention is snagged by Winter Kill. I'm too afraid to even voice a hope about Stranger Things Have Happened but the title just sounds like my favorite bookseller so I'm hoping you're taking pity on the desperate. Love your work.
