In a Dark Wood Cover Contest

original cover for In a Dark WoodThis month I'll be getting the rights back to "In a Dark Wood," one of my first short stories. The story was in the Arresting Developments anthology through Aspen Mountain Press, and it's a creepy little bit about a young travel writer who has to confront his deepest, darkest fears during one of the world's most hellish first dates.

You can read the reviews and a bit of the story right here.

Anyway, I plan to release the story as a little standalone through Amazon's Kindle and a couple of other sites, but it needs a new cover. I'm not expecting to make a bundle, obviously, since the story has been out forever, but I thought I'd hold a little contest and the winner will be credited for the cover and get $50. (US).

So here are the rules.

I'm thinking a month is probably more than long enough to come up with something, right? The deadline will be December 1st.

I don't have any particular preference as to the artwork -- photo, original art, whatever is fine -- but it does have to be your own (meaning not copyrighted material you're borrowing). Personally, I think it should be something sort of dark and moody and eerie, but I'm not the artist. I leave it to you, and I'll just know when I see it if it seems right to me or not.

My thought is that as you complete the work, you enter it into the contest by leaving word -- and a link to your work -- in the comment section of this post. That way you get to show your work to everyone -- and perhaps get some nice feedback, whether yours is the selected cover or not.

The title In a Dark Wood and my name need to appear somewhere on the cover. Here's the technical stuff:

TIFF (.tif/.tiff) or JPEG (.jpeg/.jpg) format.
Image pixel dimensions of at least 1280 pixels on the longest side, 2560 or larger preferred.
sRGB or CMYK color mode. (I have NO idea what that means -- hopefully the artists among you will)

I think that's pretty much it. I'll be doing the judging all by my lonesome, but it will be based as much as on what I think will help sell the story as what I personally like, just so we all know. My decision won't be based on artistic merit or some critical judgment beyond the fact that I think I'll know the right cover when I see it.

Feel free to pass the word along -- and if you're an artist, feel free to jump in and give it a shot.

If I missed anything -- and I probably did -- just ask the question here in the comment section -- your question may be the same as someone else's.

Not something the creator of the original cover took into account. It's blurry enough to give me a headache.

Although I am not an artist, I'm so happy you are doing this, because In a Dark Wood is absolutely my favorite (and, among your stories, it was hard competition). I just love, love, love it. I can't help hoping that you'll write more about Luke and Tim one day, but until that happens - I'm sure I'll enjoy the wonderful art people will come up with. This story can really inspire people's imagination. ^^

I'm glad. It's one of my favorites too. Once I have the rights back I can take a look at writing the sequel.

I'm hopeful we get some creative submissions.

Sounds interesting! If I know my way around Photoshop... Do you prefer men without heads? (that sounds wrong)

Or something woody... Mmmm.

Very cool contest, this is a great opportunity for the artists out there!
That story just lends itself to so many creepy images, I remember having to stop reading the story because I was up alone at night; I finished it the next day when it was light out :)
(I also liked to hear that we may get a sequel, I too loved Tim & Luke)

Sadly, I don't own any images that would be a)suitable and b)big enough. :(

Now if your story was called 'Off a High Cliff', I might be able to do something. *g*

But hey, I got almost a month, so maybe I can come up with something halfway mediocre. *g*

A Sequel is now in the realm of the possible?? Yay!! I'm chanting "Vive Josh" in my head right now)
I loved Luke and Tim! I always wondered how it worked out between them. And now, once you have completed the million other projects you have first, there is a possibility we will even find out!
Hip, Hip, Hip, Hooray!!
I'll pass the word to some of my friends (who where blessed with artistic hands damn them!) and perhaps I'll even give it a try.
I don't know if I have a chance, seeing all the talented people who are already participating, but since I live near the Woods perhaps I can take a Picture that would be appropriate. :)

Hi, Josh!

I'm sorry I can't contribute with a cover, but this is a good occasion to say that I loved the story. I especially liked the shift in perspective about what's going on with Tim (I hope I'm nor cryptic, I'm trying to avoid spoilers here): IMO that was really masterfully done.

I join the queue of people waiting for a sequel ;-).

Ciao

Let me know if the link doesn't work.

Details about how I came up with it are in the comments, but the background picture of the woods is mine. Isn't far from my house. Good fishing spot, actually. LOL. The pic of the dude layered into the corner is a royalty free stock photo from stock xchange, link included in the description. I do graphic design freelance locally (mostly directories, brochures & such), but this is my first book cover. Not bad for a fist effort, I don't think. ;-)

I haven't read the story yet but now that I've read the excerpt above, I want to. I'm torn between buying the anthology now or waiting until you re-release. I think I'll wait, since the anthology's picture is a bit off-putting. I saw a movie once where some of the characters looked like that shortly before they exploded. Or maybe the picture's just grainy?

Anyway, here's my contribution to the contest.

Yes, the first cover has its problems, certainly. In fairness the artist was trying to come up with something that represented all three stories.

I'm loving the stuff that everyone is coming up with.
